About Me

My name is Tarien Basson. I am a 21 year old artist who loves designing and creating. I strive to design things that have an impact, rather than the everyday stuff we see so often that we don’t even notice it anymore. I am energetic, responsible person who is passionate about being creative. I derive satisfaction from translating and transforming ideas into interesting concepts and designs that capture the attention of the audience. I perform best under pressure, while being a perfectionist when it comes to my designs. I enjoy working with interesting people and learning from them, interlacing their ideas with mine to create something exceptional.

I am most passionate about traditional art like charcoal drawings and paintings. I would say my hand drawn artworks and illustrations are some of my best works. Other fields in which I excel include illustration, branding and photography. I am also good at flat animation and 3D modeling. The programmes I use to create my designs are Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, AfterEffects, Photoshop and Lightroom, as well as Maya Autodesk.

My role model is Vincent Van Gogh, because there was nothing more important to him that creating. He gave up almost everything he had for his art, and I strive to be as passionate about my art as he was about his.

“I put my heart and soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.”

-Vincent Van Gogh

Here's a Quick Peek of My Work

Club Poster

For this brief, I was tasked with creating a pop up club for a music genre given to me by my lecturer. The music genre I got was Cybergoth. Cybergoths are a mixture between Ravers and Goths, and because of this they are made fun of by both of these groups. The subculture is almost completely under the radar these days, because everyone part of it is scared of being judged. My concept was to create a club where Cybergoths would be accepted again. The graphics for the campaign are all photographs of everyday people, with Cybergoth elements drawn over it in a glowing, lime green. The green sketches represent the true Cybergoth within the person in the photograph, that is still present even if they are trying to hide it from the world. The campaign is supposed to encourage Cybergoths to allow their inner Cybergoth to come out.

Character Design

One of our briefs were to create a campaign for YDPS. My campaign revolved around Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland, because I believe all artists are a little bit bonkers. We have to be, because it is what makes us unique and sets each artist aside from others in the same field. I designed a character for each person in our graphic design group. The characters were supposed to represent the person, but a Wonderland version of themselves, which is why they are all seen in strange clothes and costumes.

Lyric Video

For the YDPS campaign, we had to create a video advertising the event. Since my theme was Alice in Wonderland, I found a song that represented the theme well. I used a cooky font that suited the theme and made the lyrics of the song animate across the screen as the song played, along with an animated line, drawing images that suit the words. Everything has a slight shake and glitch to it to add to the agitated feeling of the whole video. I chose to go with that feeling because I thought that that was what best represented being a bit bonkers. At the end there is a call to action, along with all of the necessary details about the event.
